Commercial Auto

unity

As a businessowner, you need the same kinds of insurance coverages for the car you use in your business as you do for a car used for personal travel -- liability, collision and comprehensive, medical payments (known as personal injury protection in some states) and coverage for uninsured motorists.

In fact, many business people use the same vehicle for both business and pleasure. If the vehicle is owned by the business, make sure the name of the business appears on the policy as the "principal insured" rather than your name.

This will avoid possible confusion in the event that you need to file a claim or a claim is filed against you.

How to get a Commercial Auto Quote

  • Step1
Determine which cars you will need to insure under the commercial auto insurance policy.
You will need the make, model and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of each vehicle.
  • Step2
Decide how the vehicle or vehicles will be used.
Will they be used strictly for commercial use or will they also be personal-use vehicles?
  • Step3
Research the value of the vehicle.
The "Kelley Blue Book" is a good source of vehicle value information.
You can go to the Kelley Blue Book website or a variety of other websites, such as Edmunds.com, to determine the value.
  • Step4
Collect all of the information about yourself and any drivers that may be using the vehicle.
You will need the name and address of each driver, their driver’s license number and the state in which the license was issued, their date of birth and social security number and any accidents or driving violations in the past three years.
Be sure that you include everyone that will need to be insured under the commercial auto insurance policy.
  • Step5
Calculate the normal driving distance that the vehicle will be used.
If you work in a home office and don’t drive very often your policy, should reflect the limited use.
If you drive far distances on a daily basis, it is important that your policy covers this type of use. The driving distance doesn’t need to be exact but needs to be realistic.
  • Step6
Organize all of your information logically and begin your research.
Having all the appropriate and correct information beside you will help make your insurance policy search easier.
